I’ve compiled the useful rules for the setting out of the 5th edition books and done some of the legwork for those that read on so that they can put their mind to storytelling and playing. It is not meant to be definitive and the new concepts are no more than one DM’s view of what this world could be. This document I’ve put together is meant to put Ravenloft back in the minds of my fellow gamers out there. The setting itself was so different than the medieval fantasy that dominated the landscape of Dungeons and Dragons. There were tragic villains with more substance than the cackling madmen of so many other game modules. I experienced Light fighting an impossible war against nearly all-powerful Darkness. Ravenloft always captured my imagination. As I began working, looking over old sourcebooks and new rules, I realized how much nostalgia I had for the old setting. Beyond this, all that was necessary to run a Ravenloft game was already in existence, found in the Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual that are all finally now published for D&D 5th. Races needed to be defined, backgrounds tailored, and religions needed to match current domains. Very little needed to be done, in my mind.
Introduction This began as a personal project wherein I updated the Ravenloft setting for Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition in order to prepare for a future campaign.
